Tec Basics

Philosophy

Tec Basics is a multi use course that focuses on orientation to new tec equipment, technical diving skills and techniques. It is an optional level that can also be used to help divers learn new configurations or refine their skills before moving on to the next Tec Diver level.

Using the same equipment configuration as during the course, Tec Basics Divers dive with a redundant gas source, either single cylinder plus bailout cylinder, sidemount or back mount doubles. Optional for divers who are at least 18 years old they can dive using a deco cylinder (gas must be breathable at all depths of the dive).

Prerequisites

  • PADI Advanced Open Water Diver with PADI Rescue Diver recommended
  • PADI Enriched Air Diver
  • 15 years old

Duration

2 days: knowledge development, practical application and minimum two confined open water dives.

Materials

PADI Tec Basics Diver eLearning (not included in the course fee).

Equipment

Full tec equipment with single cylinder or double cylinder configuration. Use of deco cylinder during the course is optional. Two complete regulators: two first stages, each with a second stage, one with a two metre hose and one with SPG. Wing type BCD with harness and attachment points for deco cylinders with sufficient lift to keep the diver’s head out of the water at the surface. Two multi-gas dive computers capable of switching between all gases used during the course or one computer and one bottom timer and a backup dive plan or two bottom timers with a dive plan and backup dive plan. Exposure suit appropriate for environment and dive duration. Also, backup mask, visual and audible surface signaling devices, reel or spool (two recommended), DSMB or lift bag (two recommended), knife or cutting device and backup, wetnotes or slate and pencil, compass and weight system.
